Recently, the 9th Member Representative Congress of the China Steel Construction Society (CSSA) and the 2025 China Steel Structure Conference were held in Nanning, Guangxi. At the conference, the winners of the 2025 CSSA Science and Technology Awards were announced and presented. The project “Key Technologies and Applications for Enhancing the Resilience of Long-Span Steel Cable-Supported Bridges,” led by Prof. Liu Gao from the School of Civil Engineering, Southeast University, won the Special Prize of the CSSA Science and Technology Progress Award—one of only four projects nationwide to receive this honor.

Long-span steel cable-supported bridges are widely used in major crossings over rivers and seas and in canyon corridors. However, their safety and resilience under typical extreme hazards—such as strong earthquakes, high winds, and fires—as well as under operational actions including temperature effects and heavy traffic loads, still require significant improvement. In response to national strategic needs, this project addressed key challenges related to resilient structural systems for long-span steel cable-supported bridges, novel high-ductility and high-toughness structural components, efficient aerodynamic measures, and fire-resistance technologies for cables. The outcomes have effectively enhanced bridge safety and resilience, supported the high-quality construction and health monitoring/maintenance of a number of major projects in China and abroad, and promoted technological progress in the industry—providing important scientific and technological support for national strategies such as building China into a transportation powerhouse.

The CSSA Science and Technology Awards are industry honors approved by the National Office for Science and Technology Awards and established by the China Steel Construction Society (CSSA). The society also recommends outstanding achievements for consideration in China’s National Science and Technology Awards. It is reported that a total of 118 Science and Technology Progress Awards were presented in 2025, including 4 Special Prizes, 50 First Prizes, and 64 Second Prizes, along with 48 Technology Innovation Awards.
