On October 21, 2024, the finals of the 2024 Jinxi Cup Steel Structure Innovation Competition, organized by the China Steel Structure Association, were successfully held in Beijing. After intense competition, the Southeast University team’s entry, Yunyi New Residence, stood out and won the first prize.

The project was guided by teachers Zheng Baofeng, Zhou Lin, Hu Bilin, and Lu Ruihua, and the team consisted of students from the School of Civil Engineering and the School of Architecture, including Leng Ziyang, Chen Hongyi, Gu Sijia, Huang Kedi, Kang Jiacheng, Kuang Defeng, Liang Zhengyang, Lin Weidong, Liu Wenrui (graduate student), Chen Zhangyu, and Zhang Zhengkang. The team received strong support from teachers Shu Ganping, Fan Shenggang, Lu Jinyu, and Sha Xiaodong from the Southeast University Design Institute during their preparation. The competition entry actively responded to General Secretary Xi Jinping’s call in the report of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China for “comprehensively advancing rural revitalization” and “building livable and business-friendly beautiful villages.” It closely adhered to the competition theme of New Rural Housing, focusing on residential buildings in Nanhua County, Chuxiong Prefecture, Yunnan. The design concept emphasized “respecting culture and continuing tradition, and low-carbon modular construction for new rural housing.” The project featured innovative aspects such as “new modular steel structures,” “continuing tradition while stimulating vitality,” and “low-carbon, energy-efficient, and sustainable solutions,” providing a solid proposal for livable and business-friendly beautiful villages, which garnered unanimous praise from the judges.

The National College Steel Structure Innovation Competition is a high-level national discipline competition hosted by the China Steel Structure Association. The competition aims to stimulate the innovative capabilities of students in civil engineering and architecture programs at higher education institutions, foster teamwork spirit, enhance engineering practical skills, and promote collaboration between industry, academia, and research, thereby creating opportunities for outstanding talents in steel structure innovation to emerge. Since the competition began in 2015, our students have performed exceptionally well, consistently winning first prizes and above, reflecting the spirit of “pursuing excellence” and aspiring to become leading talents with a sense of national pride and international vision, capable of leading the future and benefiting humanity.
