From September 23 to 27, 2024, the 5th International Conference on Geomechanics from Micro to Macro was held in Grenoble, France. During this conference, the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) TC105 Geomechanics from Micro to Macro committee conducted a vote, and after two rounds of intense competition, it was finally decided that our university will lead the organization of the 6th International Conference on Geomechanics from Micro to Macro (IS-Nanjing 2028) in May 2028 in the ancient city of Nanjing.

The International Conference on Geomechanics from Micro to Macro was initiated by Professor Malcolm Bolton from the University of Cambridge and is held every four years. It has been successfully hosted in Japan at Yamaguchi University (2006), China at Tongji University (2010), the UK at Cambridge University (2014), the USA at Georgia Tech (2018), and France in Grenoble (2024). This conference is recognized as the highest-level and most authoritative international academic conference in the field of geomechanics. It brings together scientists and engineers in geotechnical engineering to share the latest advancements in fundamental theory, experimental techniques, numerical computations, and engineering applications, while collaboratively exploring the frontiers and future developments of the discipline.

Prior to the conference, Professor Li Xia from our university represented the Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Division of the Chinese Society of Civil Engineering to submit a bid report and video introduction to the ISSMGE TC105 Geomechanics from Micro to Macro committee. This presentation detailed the conference venue, organizing institutions, and preparatory plans. After two rounds of fierce competition, the committee members voted, resulting in the Chinese scholar team led by Southeast University being awarded the rights to host the 6th International Conference on Geomechanics from Micro to Macro. During the closing ceremony, Professor Kenichi Soga, chair of the committee from the University of California, Berkeley, announced the voting results and presented the bid video from the Chinese scholar team. The video highlighted Nanjing's rich culture and modernization, as well as Southeast University's century-long history and dual-first-class development, significantly enhancing the international community's recognition of China, Nanjing, and our university, thereby increasing our visibility and influence in the field of geomechanics from micro to macro.

IS-Nanjing 2028 will be co-hosted by the ISSMGE TC105 Geomechanics from Micro to Macro committee and the Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Division of the Chinese Society of Civil Engineering. The event will be organized by Southeast University in collaboration with universities such as Suzhou University of Science and Technology, Zhejiang University, and Tsinghua University. The successful bid for this conference is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the global Chinese community in this field and signifies the increasing recognition and attention that scholars in our country are receiving from the international community for their outstanding contributions.
