On the afternoon of July 12, the closing ceremony and exhibition of the Magic Folds 2024 international workshop was held in the lobby on the first floor of the School of Civil Engineering. Professor Wang Chen, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Office of Southeast University, Associate Professor Yao Yiming, Vice Dean of the School of Civil Engineering, Professor Cai Jianguo, Assistant Dean, Professor Daniel S-H Lee of the Royal Danish Academy, Professor Alireza Behnejad of the University of Surrey, Professor Kim SeungDeog, Professor Gao Kang, Associate Professor Chen Zhenyu, Dr. Liu Tianzhen, Dr. Marco Meloni, and more than 50 students from the UK, Denmark, and China attended the closing ceremony.

Deputy Director Wang Chen first thanked the co-organizers of the event, the University of Surrey in the UK and the Royal Danish Academy. The friendship established by this event laid the foundation for further cooperation among all parties in the future. The exchange of ideas and knowledge innovation generated by the international workshop in the past month are obvious to all, which has a positive effect on cultivating international innovative talents.

Vice Dean Yao Yiming pointed out that the international workshop promoted discussion and exchange among students through lectures and seminars, model making and experimental research, and sparked innovation. He hoped that students could apply what they learned from the activities to their future studies and lives, and contribute to the development and progress of civil engineering.

Professor Daniel S-H Lee reviewed and commented on the event. He highly appreciated the students’ positive learning attitude, cooperative spirit, creativity and innovative spirit demonstrated in this workshop, and affirmed the excellent works exhibited by the students at the closing ceremony.

Professor Alireza Behnejad expressed his sincere gratitude for the warm reception from Southeast University and affirmed the positive significance of this event to both schools and students. Finally, he sincerely invited Southeast University to visit and exchange with the University of Surrey in the UK to reach more cooperation.

Afterwards, the participants watched the summary video of the Magic Folds 2024 international workshop and had in-depth exchanges on the works on display.

The Magic Folds 2024 international workshop lasted for one month, during which participants discussed in depth the innovative application of origami structures in modern civil engineering and architectural design through lectures, model making, experimental research and other forms. The five groups of works exhibited at the closing ceremony used origami technology and structure to design structures with different sound insulation effects, which was a fruitful exploration of cross-disciplinary innovation in art and engineering.
