From April 15th to April 17th, 2021, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) hosted the 2021 ASCE Mid-Pacific Student Conference, which took place online and was held by the University of California, Fresno. The competition attracted renowned universities from around the world, including the University of California, Berkeley, Davis, Chico, Southeast University, Tongji University, Zhejiang University, and Hohai University.

A team from our university, consisting of students Zhuang Cheng, Liu Jinshuo, Xu Yitong from the 2018 major in Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering, Fang Zhuozhen from the major in Engineering Management, and Chen Huawei from the major in Civil Engineering, participated in the Sustainable Solutions Competition. Through online defense and subsequent evaluation sessions, their project, “Breathing Planet,” received the historic achievement of third place in the Mid-Pacific region for the Sustainable Solutions Competition (https://studentconferences.asce.org/mid-pac/results/). This competition also marked the first formal participation of our university's water supply and drainage competition team since 2016.

The Sustainable Solutions Competition for this year adapted to the challenges posed by the pandemic, focusing on water treatment and environmental issues. Faced with the new topic requirements, under the careful guidance of teachers Tan Chaoqun, Ma Jinxia, and Xu Yan, all team members began preparations in mid-January 2021 and developed a sustainable campus green space planning scheme that met the competition requirements. The online defense of the competition officially started at 7:10 a.m. Beijing time on April 17th, with the Southeast University delegation being the first to present. The team's design concept and details received full recognition and high praise from the judging panel.
